December 28, 2008

Happy 48th anniversary to my Mom and Dad. What a joyous occasion to celebrate during the Christmas season. Many blessings for many more wonderful years.

I hope that everyone is home safe and sound from their travels over the holidays. I am sure you are all ready to jump right in to Your New Year's commitments! I honestly hadn't even thought of resolutions for the year. Not that I don't have many things I need to work on, just hasn't made the priority list yet. Better hurry, 2009 is just days away!

We're Home!

We are back home and back to reality. Everyone had a great time and a great Christmas in the mountains. Thanks mom and dad for helping to make it possible for us to all enjoy a vacation together. The white Christmas soon disappeared as we descended from the mountains, and headed back to Texas. We left at 6:00 am with a temp of 26 degrees and heavy snow and it was 70 and sunny when we arrived in Munday that afternoon. It is like stepping through a window from one world to another in just a few short miles. (I don't know why I am surprised. In North Texas we can go from shorts to snowing in less than 24 hours with ease!)

We skied on Wednesday after the fresh snow. I am grateful to those young whippersnappers who are adventurous and kept us "20 year olds"???? going. They were a joy to ski with. No broken bones or injuries and only a few colds and coughs, all in all, a great time. The kids got their wildlife 101 on the trip home and they actually seemed kind of excited about it. We saw many elk, deer, antelope, ground hogs, and even pheasant. Of course, once we were back to Texas, we saw plenty of skunks too. Thank goodness for electronics and TV's, but the good ole alphabet games still work just as well. Thanks to cell phones, you can "call a friend" when you are stumped to add a new twist.

Now the countdown begins. By this evening I should have a calendar posted so everyone can keep up with events leading to Mark's surgery day. (That is if my semi computer literate mind gets it together.) Thanks to all for your continued support and prayers.

It's Snowing

At least in New Mexico. I wish we could have packed everyone up and brought them along. It is so pretty. The kids are having a great time. I don't like them growing up so quick, but it is really neat to watch them be excited about things and making lasting memories. Chasing after them on the mountain hasn't been too bad. Honestly, I like to keep them in front of me in case they need bailing out. That really isn't very often. We have quite a large group skiing together and it is working great. The highlight of today was the deer walking across the ski slope in front of the kids. We were separated at the time, so I missed it. I was a little busy rescuing Abby from her wrong turn leading her to the black run. She looked over the edge and said, "I don't think I can do that." I am not sure if getting her down the black wouldn't have been easier than the walk back up!

Mark is enjoying some R&R and has been providing chauffeur service as well. He said to let everyone know he was "taking it easy and enjoying himself". He is feeling well and even drove the whole way here.

We celebrated Christmas here yesterday and look forward to our time with Mark's family this week also. Busy, Busy. Hope everyone is enjoying their Christmas holidays as much as we are. Love to all, Missy

Just Hello

Merry Christmas Ya'll. It has turned cold here, much to my disliking. For me, the cold is something you go visit in the mountains. I would like to return to a balmy 90 degrees and sunshine please. As for today, a dreary freezing 19 degrees will have to do.

All is well here. Landon is over strep throat. Abby is trying to come down with a little something, and the rest of us appear healthy. I haven't heard, but I do hope Grandmother and Granddaddy are still well and didn't pick up any germs while they were here.

I wish you all were getting the pleasure of spending time with Mark. He is back to his usual witty, ornery, self. Catch 22 there. I guess we will take acting rotten over feeling poorly! It is really great to see him feeling better. Looks like we will get to enjoy several good weeks before surgery.

Today is great because I am off. I am awaiting a delivery at the house, so I am forced to stay at home and be productive. (Can't run anymore) I am attempting to have Christmas and vacation ready prior to leaving on Sat. Hope everyone is well and enjoying a very blessed Christmas season. Stay cozy. Missy

Follow Up CT scan

Went in this morning at 11:00 for the 8 week follow up CT scan - making sure the aneurysm had not gotten any bigger. Once again, God is taking care of things... the aneurysm doesn't appear to be any larger and if anything it has gotten a little smaller. That being said, we will proceed with surgery in Jan. Thanks for all the "gametime prayers" today - they work!!!
If you can't tell yet, It's not Missy posting today--it's me -- the Sheriff himself. I'm not as good with words as Missy but I'll try. I don't even know where to begin telling everyone thanks for all you have done, are doing , and will do in the days to come. I want everyone to know that Missy and I have truly experienced God's love through his people since this all began. There is nothing like it. I could go on for hours sharing...but wont put you all through that. Please know that we love each and every one of you that have given your support ( yes-- even you stinky butt guys - and you all know who you are) we love you too. The journey has only begun so let's get to going. Mark

The Date is Set

Hello again,

I know, it is the day after. I set everyone up for big news, and I was just too tired to post. Long day yesterday with traveling, appointment, basketball, tumbling, and a sick child. Thanks to all who made yesterday run a little more smoothly. We couldn't do it without you.

So here is the big news. The date for Mark's colon surgery is set for January 13th. Dr. Crim was very good to us and understanding of our crazy schedules. The timing was perfect to get us through the Archer County Show weekend on the 9th and 10th. He was even more gracious to consider Mark's comfort and defer all examinations on today's visit. Mark reeeaaaalllyy thinks he likes him now!

The surgery is scheduled for 7:30 am and will last at least 3 and 1/2 hours and the hospital stay will be 7-10 days. We will be at Baylor Medical Center in Irving. We took the time yesterday to go there and visit and see the facility. We found several important bits of info. The surgery waiting room is large and you can eat in it! There is wireless access in the hospital also. Thanks to Aunt Judy, I can keep you up to date with info promptly while we are there! I know everyone will appreciate that. Parking is free! ( I am always there for the bargain!)

Tomorrow is still a really big day. Mark has his CT scan tomorrow to look at his heart. I guess the January 13th surgery is pending tomorrow's findings. They will be looking for any growth in the size of the aneurysm on his aorta. Needless to say, I have been asking for lots of prayers for shrinkage. (Mark says I must clarify, as this is not a typical manly request!). His aneurysm is quite large and if they see that it has grown over this 8 week period, they will feel that his heart will take priority and his heart surgery would come first. I don't want there to be any question about it (since we are talking about millimeters of change), so I am praying for it to shrink. This would mean that all plans would stay the same.

Whatever the case, it is out of our hands. As is this whole situation. Every now and then I find myself trying to take control (imagine that), or worry about whether we are doing the "best" thing, or whether we are at the "best" hospital with the "best" doctor. In the next breath, I remind myself that we have done what we have been led to do, and no matter what, God is in the driver's seat. No matter who operates or where we are from here on out, all we can do is pray that God is guiding the hands of the people we have entrusted Mark's care to. I just know that if we ever have any questions or doubts, we know exactly where to go.

P.S. I just thought I would add another small request (or little wish) Everyone think SNOW. We are still planning a family Christmas in the mountains and New Mexico has not seen an abundance of snow yet. The kids are hoping for a blizzard before we go!

Celebrate!!!!

That's right, Just another reason to celebrate all our blessings. Chemo and radiation are over!! Woohoo. Mark is doing well and we are so thankful that his treatment time went as well as it did. Your prayers and support were awesome and carried us the whole way.

Thanksgiving was wonderful. We were so glad to get to spend time with family. It was just too short. Thanks to everyone who put together the Himmels reunion and Berend celebration. It was splendid. Also to mom, and the Brown's who prepared such delicious feasts to fatten us up. It worked quite well. Thanks also to Uncle Ray, Aunt Dorothy and Chris. Your birthday adventures for Emily will make lasting memories. Abby really enjoyed her sleepover at the Lonesome Dove. Hope the girls are friends for life!

Just one more reason for celebration. Grandpa Berend turned 95 years old on Sunday. Can you believe God is so good to us. He is still as active as ever and he and Grandma are such a joy to be around. We are so blessed by our gift of great grandparents.

We are looking forward to things settling down for several weeks now so we can enjoy the Christmas season. We are anticipating more quality family time and even celebrating a white Christmas on the slopes with my family. Mark is going to get a little break this year. He won't be able to ski, so he won't have to try so hard to keep up with the kids on the mountain. Keep us in your prayers for an injury free vacation (especially for us older folks!)

We see Dr. Crim (colo-rectal surgeon) on December 8th. We will set a surgery date then. It looks like possibly mid January. We'll have more specifics after our visit Monday.

I hope everyone is enjoying a very blessed holiday. We are so, so thankful for our many blessings. God has been so good to us. As I laid in my warm bed this morning, still stuffed from all the food I ate yesterday, and hearing my beautiful children talking in their sleep in the other room, and my husband snoring next to me, and saw the sun coming up off the ground as far as I could see to the east, I thought to myself, "I can't possibly even count the number of ways that I am blessed." We have so much, not so many things, but so much more than all the money could ever buy. We have been so richly blessed by His plan.

Would you ever feel blessed for a loved one to be sick. While I have said before how much I dislike that Mark is having to do this, and I never want him to suffer, I just can't help but feel good that God actually chose my husband to do something so big! It is not necessarily a blessing we would ask for, but, since when do we have a choice in how we are to be blessed? I truly believe that we can find positive in everything we do. We might have to dig really deep, and sometimes even wait a really long time to find it, but as long as we are searching for the positive, God will bring it to us. We have the most wonderful family and friends ever (of which we are reminded daily through all of this.) It breaks my heart to know that there are others who endure such challenges alone, and I pray that they find God and his blessings. I also pray for all others who are sick and suffering, from whatever physical, mental or emotional illness, that they too might find peace through their trials. May they know that God brought them to it, not so they could suffer or to punish them, but so they would seek Him to bring them through it.

Today, we are going to celebrate my Grandma Himmels Berend's family reunion. What a wonderful blessing of deep rooted heritage. She and her many sisters and their families will gather to celebrate all that we are so fortunate to have and of course - eat more food! Also, on this day, we are celebrating my Grandma and Grandpa Berend's 70th wedding anniversary. Our family will celebrate together with a special mass in their honor before the reunion. What an enormous feat. We are so blessed by there presence , there good health, and their example to all of us. I pray for them and all of their family that, as they continue to age, God will continue to be their guide, providing peace, comfort, and acceptance as He carries out His plan.

By the way, Week 4 and 1/2 is over. Woohoo!!!! Of course, the Cancer treatment Center wanted the holiday off as well. He will finish up treatment at the start of next week. He had a good week, and even one GREAT day. (I hope I marked that on the calendar.) It was quite memorable. He woke up feeling and acting himself, and it lasted throughout an entire day. Woohoo!!! Just another thing to be thankful for.

I hope this wonderful day finds you all healthy, happy, and stuffed full of great food. We love you all, Missy.

Smile, Thanksgiving is just one week away.

The holidays are here, and my waistline is already feeling it. We celebrated Thanksgiving at the Uniform shop this week, and I do mean all week. The meal was supposed to be Tuesday, but we have been eating on it ever since!

Tomorrow is the end of week four. Labs this week remain good. Mark has encountered a few new discomforts here and there, but overall is still doing well. We are so praying that things will return to normal for him after this five weeks of treatments is over. I know he is looking forward to better days ahead and getting to enjoy the holiday season. Only 6 treatments left. Due to the holiday next week, we should be celebrating his last treatment on December 2, 2008. He has an appointment to see the colo-rectal surgeon on Monday, December 8th. Dr. Crim will schedule a surgery date at that time. We will also do another CT scan prior to that appointment (not scheduled yet.)

We will have plenty to keep busy with as the chickens arrived yesterday! In case you are wondering, the boys raise chickens for one of their 4H projects at the Archer County Junior Livestock Show. It is definitely a family affair. Even Abby tries to make pets out of these 75 little birds.

Continued prayers for Phillip, and Pauline and to all of our loved ones who face new challenges each day. Keep the faith! Love to all, Missy

3 weeks and counting!

Hello all,

Mark is doing well this weekend. We are so glad to have 3 weeks behind us. He would only be happier if we were at the end of week five! He is sure ready to feel himself again and is really hoping for that after treatments are over.

It was good to see our family over the weekend for a wedding. Congratulations to Adam and Natalea and best wishes for many happy years together. Thanks for allowing Abby to participate in your special day and for allowing the rest of us to share it with you.

Also, a very special birthday wish to my friend Barbara. It is hard to believe we have been friends for sooooooo many years. I know you have a few more days to enjoy your thirties, but thanks for making me a part of your celebration. Barbara is another one of our many "real friends". (See post from October 19th for more explanation)

And I couldn't forget the Windthorst Volleyball team. They are allowing us a trip to Austin next weekend. Thanks Tanna to you and all of your teammates for working so hard this year. We look forward to watching you in your final state volleyball tournament next weekend. Anyone in the Austin area next weekend should make plans to watch some good volleyball. Go Blue!

What a weekend! So much to be thankful for. It is Thanksgiving everyday around here, but I am sure looking forward to celebrating all that we have with family and friends as the holiday nears. Thanks for everyone and everything you do - everyday. Missy

Hello all,

Happy Veterans Day, especially for all of you federal and state and employees and bankers who are really getting to enjoy it!

Today Mark saw Dr. Delizio (oncologist). The visit was simply a follow up to his chemotherapy treatment. He reviewed his lab, nutrition, and side effects. All of which are doing fairly well. We had many questions, all of which he answered for us. The plan of chemoradiation, surgery, and chemo following surgery has not changed. We do have a few specifics. The "5 week" thing is really 25 treatments. This means it will be into the sixth week before we finish due to the holiday. 25 treatments is all there will be, regardless of what is happening with the tumor. Treatment is not dependent on whether the tumor shrinks or not. The standard treatment is the same 5 weeks. Some tumors will shrink to being barely visible, and some will not change in size at all. Every tumor may respond differently to the radiation. Regardless of the response to this treatment, the fact is that recurrence of cancer in the pelvis is less common if it is treated as we are doing.

That is how we want it, rid of this for good!

There will not be a need to see the oncologist again until after surgery. The chemotherapy cocktail for treatment afterwards will be determined by the findings during surgery. Just a reminder, the plan is for surgery mid January.

Just think, tomorrow is the midway point of this treatment and Thursday marks the downhill slide. Yeeeaaahhh. God is so good.

Woohoo, The end of week two!

Once again, Mark may not agree, but I think life is just awesome. He is doing so well. We know how bad it could be and we have had two weeks of being pretty fortunate. Yes he is tired and dragging, but the list of side effects they gave to us he has not seen yet. God willing, we will make it 3 more weeks without them creeping up on him. From the information we received, next week could bring more challenges, but we'll take that as it comes and like I said, maybe it won't come!

Mark will see the oncologist next week just to check up and review the plan and make sure everything is going as expected. The Radiology Oncologist is also seeing him weekly and lab is drawn weekly. The visit this week was pretty uneventful. A few changes in his lab this week, but not significant enough to change any plans.

We hope everyone is well, and we sure do appreciate your continued prayers. Not a day goes by that we don't here of a new prayer list or a new person praying. I just know God can't ignore all these people knocking on His door, and I am sure He is tickled to death with all of the people turning to Him for support. All in His plan I believe.

A special THANK YOU my two friends Lorrie and Betty today. I appreciate you so much. I bribed these two into going to an insurance meeting with me. Now that is true friendship!. We are so blessed to have so many wonderful friends and family who would do anything for us.

Hello everyone,

Happy day to all of you. I hope everyone is adjusting to the new time change. Not my favorite for sure. It means its going to get cold. Uggghhhh.

We had a great weekend. Busy, busy as usual. So busy that you almost forget about all your troubles just to get through one activity after the next. We did family pictures on Sat morning followed by a birthday party at Paws and Claws in the mall. We got a good long nap Sat. afternoon before attending an anniversary party for some friends. It was a costume party as well. Thought you would like to see Mark sporting a glimpse of his future! (oh, my picture won't upload, I will have to get back to you on that one)

Today started Week#2. Marks says today was a good day. That was until he spent an hour in the Walgreen's pharmacy. I'm telling you, he is way too nice! I finally went in to see what in the world was taking so long ( and I probably wasn't quite so nice) He was beat after standing there for so long, but all in all, a good day.

Everyone please pray for Pauline, our friend who is also fighting colon cancer. She has her chemo treatment plan for the next six months. We want only the best for her during this time and know that God with be with her each step of the way.

Also to the Cypert family, we are glad to hear Phillip is recovering from his surgery and illness and we continue to pray for good health for him, Uncle Billy Paul, and all of your family that are burdened with difficult times.

Happy Halloween

Woo Hooooooo! It's Friday! We are so excited to be finished with week 1. Well, I seem to be a little more excited than Mark, but still one week down. One week closer to getting it all over with. Hey, you have to count even the baby steps.

I am sure some people are thinking they are having withdrawals from no posts for a couple of days. Please know that if I don't post, it is because I am entirely too tired (probably fell asleep on the couch) or have absolutely nothing to say (you might have guessed that the latter is probably not the case.) Otherwise I'll do my best to keep you up.

The good news is Mark has had two restful nights. Yeeeaaahhhh! The discomfort he was having seems to be easing also which allows for better rest for him. All in all, we can't complain. We seem to be off to a good start. We are so blessed. Many prayers are working!

The bad news is -- Oh, I Don't have any bad news Yeeaaaahhhhhh!

Blessings to Laurie V, I hear her surgery went well as expected.

Many , Many blessing to all of the Cypert family, (Marks mothers side of his family). Difficult news and challenges seem to be abundant right now. It all seems a little overwhelming, but I know that God is keeping a watchful eye on all of this 'mess'. With the strength and faith of your family, you are surely in good hands.

Happy and safe trick or treating to everyone. I am happy to say we got that out of the way on Wednesday. Small towns are great. You want to change a little holiday festivity (so it doesn't interfere with a football game!!?), and all you have to do is shout it out, put it in the local paper, and on the billboard and it's done. I love this place!

Just a quick note.

Today was day 2. It seems Tuesday will be see the doctor day. Mark will meet with the radiology oncologist on Tuesdays to review how he is doing each week. He feels like it will might take 2 to 3 weeks before he really starts seeing side effects from the radiation. Right now he is just really tired. Keep praying for good rest.

He has met up with couple of our friends when he has gone for treatments. Cancer is just a big bad thing, but God is bigger and he is on our side. For all you Windthorst folks, "we believe" has taken on a whole new meaning for me!

Don't forget to keep Laurie in your prayers for her upcoming surgery. We want only the best news for her this week.

October 27, 2008 pm

Oh happy day! We have finally, officially and for really started fighting this thing! That is so exciting to us. We were so ready to at least get started on something. The machine was fixed and he went this afternoon. So today is day one of five weeks of chemo and radiation. Mark is in the bed already. He is dragging a little today, saying he feels a little achy all over and tired, but in general is feeling well. Pray for a good nights sleep.

Oh, I almost forgot, we heard from Dr. Cooley today! He responded by e-mail. He thanked us for requesting his recommendation and asked that we keep him up to date with the progress of his cancer treatment. After reviewing Mark's records, he agrees that the cancer poses the "most immediate threat to his life." He also mentioned that his aorta may have been somewhat dilated all along as a result of his original aortic stenosis and valve replacements. At any rate, the plan will remain the same then, to continue cancer treatment as long as there are no changes with his heart. Which brings us to another prayer. I say lets not just pray for no growth of the aneurysm, but why not go for shrinking a little? Anything is possible and maybe the blood pressure medicine will help. That's a long time away though. We will just keep working day by day.

Oh my, I must go. Instead of sleeping, Abby has been wiggling away at a loose tooth. She is now missing three of her front teeth and is working on #4. Family pictures this weekend. This should be one to remember. She is breaking the tooth fairy$$$$$!!!!

To all anxiously waiting,

Well, it didn't happen - again. The machine was broken when Mark arrived for radiation. No reschedule yet. They are waiting on a technician to assess the problem. If they can fix, they might call him to come this afternoon. Don't anyone hold your breath! We'll let you know more when something happens.

God knows my only true weakness is patience when it comes to paying money for services. (okay, maybe there are others too.) At any rate, I will learn patience through all of this. Mark is so much more patient than I and he is just waiting for the next call. keep your fingers crossed!

Couldn't Wait

Hello all,

Awesome, Awesome, Awesome. I wish I could have taken all of you with us.

I know I said I would update on Monday, but I just couldn't wait to let everyone know about our outing last night. Somehow Mark's brother and sisters were able to get us tickets to a sold out Mercy Me concert in Wichita Falls. I don't know why we thought we wanted to go, but about a week ago we learned of the concert and thought we would like it. We let it go, knowing we would need the money in many other places. We must have let it slip that we would like to go and someone went to work. By the end of the week we had two tickets to the concert and a whole bag full of gifts from KMOC, a local radio station. One day we will know the rest of the story!

I don't think either one of us really had any expectations for the concert. Really, both of us thought that we wanted to go hear them sing "I Can Only Imagine" and everything else would just be a new experience for us. I listen to the two Christian music stations, but as with all singers, actors, etc.. I am definitely not on my game. When we arrived 45 min early and the line was wound around the parking lot, my thought was "They must be pretty good if all these people would stand in line to see them."

Bevo Norman opened for Mercy Me. He was very good and also a very good speaker, but no indication of what was to come. When the band came out and lights came up, the setting was somewhat similiar to a rock concert. The same energy, and excitement, and yet, it wasn't just about the music. Sure, the music was good, great performances, and an uplifting spirit in the church, but the whole event had meaning and purpose. They prayed, they worshipped, and they were all there for one reason, because there is a greater God that inspires all of these people who want to be like him.

Mark and I both felt as if these people were speaking to us. They told our story and they confirmed our faith. Something really big is going to happen through all of this. We are going to see God work in a big way. He wants us to glorify him. In our time of need he will come down and save the day and we will give him the glory for all of it. That is what he wants, for us to glorify him.

We are very grateful to you guys for making it possible for us to go. We definitely need the renewal and pick me up every now and then. Thanks to Tessa also for keeping the kids this weekend, they had a great time with their cousins.

Hello all,

Friday was a great day. Both Mark and I rested well on Thursday and he is feeling much better. Praise God! We even made the trip to Munday to watch the football game!

Mark returned to the cancer treatment center yesterday for his simulation and it appears that everything is set to go for Monday. We won't put any money on it, but that is the plan. We spoke with Dr. Crim via the telephone. Nothing new, just a review of the plan to make sure we are all on the same page with all of the physicians. No news from Dr. Cooley in Houston yet.

Nothing happened today!

Good evening to everyone, or maybe it is late night,

At any rate, I know everyone is anxious to find about about the last couple of days and especially today. Through the grapevine you might have heard that absolutely nothing happened today!!!!! Just another case of not having all of the information. We thought we were scheduled for radiation today. Soooo, Mark started his chemotherapy this morning by mouth, as instructed, and went to the cancer treatment center this afternoon for radiation. What we didn't know was that today was simply a history taking, consent signing, picture taking,information giving, tattooing day. Not only that, but tomorrow is more of the same. They will do a simulation of the radiation with all of the settings they created from today's visit. And finally, Monday is supposed to start the real thing. AAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

Okay, now that I have that out, we did learn a few things about his radiation today. The lengthy wait following this five week treatment plan is to allow time for the body to heal, swelling, pain, etc. Also, the tissue death from radiation does not all occur at the time of radiation. It happens over a period of several weeks following radiation. So waiting the six weeks allows him to get the full benefit of the radiation. The radiation oncologist was a nice and seemingly knowledgeable man who was able to answer all of our questions and provide beneficial information. It also helps to see familiar faces when you go to new places and Mark Knew several of the people in that center. The down side of the visit, other than being seemingly unproductive, was learning that ulcerative colitis patients tend to have a more difficult time with radiation. They already have an inflammatory bowel process, and the added radiation creates increased side effects and greater risks. The whole experience was not bad, it was just disappointing to think we were finally starting to get a hold on this, only to find out there was more waiting.

I think my positive news will have to come from yesterday. (I can do that since I did not post yesterday). Previously I mentioned that the cardiovascular surgeon recommended we get a second opinion due to the complexity and uniqueness of Marks situation. I contacted Texas Heart Institute in Houston and was able to make a contact at Dr. Denton Cooley's office. This is the physician that performed Marks previous two open heart surgeries. The lady who help me was wonderful. She was going to pull Mark's record's (from the archives and remove the dust, of course) and keep them to put with information she requested to be fed ex'd. We sent results ad films from exams, and a letter explaining our request. She said that he would review all of Mark's information and get back with us. I was just a little excited, so I got it all together yesterday and sent it to be there by noon today. I will let you know if and when I get a response.

We are supposed to visit with Dr. Crim, the colorectal surgeon tomorrow by telephone to follow up on a few things from our last visit. He is supposed to have some feedback for us as well. I will update any new news.

I thank you all so much for your continued support. We are definitely beginning to experience that emotional roller coaster, and I am talking shock wave style, up, and down, and in complete circles. Our life is crazily overwhelming and exhausting right now and we know that it will not end soon. This is why we are so appreciative of everyone. You do not know how uplifting it is to hear from so many of you. Many who we hardly ever get to see. We love you all and are leaning on you and your prayers tremendously.

Good Morning to everyone.

I think I can actually see the computer screen this morning. My fingers will just have to wake up a little!

Yesterdays positive - We met another physician that we have a lot of confidence. That is really important to us. He was very concerned with doing what is best for Mark. The long and short of all this is that Mark is in need of a major heart surgery in addition to his needs for the cancer. Unfortunately, this is not something that physicians are faced with just a whole lot and certainly is not something that is prevalent enough to research. You might guess that that means, there are no definite decisions in place about what the right or best decision is for Mark's plan of care.

If we only had our crystal balls, we would look in there for some guidance. If we only knew which "problem" to take care of first. Heck, if they only knew for certain which medical risk was more pressing. So the steps to making a decision include weighing the risks, rolling the dice, playing the cards, and all those other things you do when you take chances.
Well. That's great if you are a gambler. Some of you know, I am not. Mark and I both are very much convinced that there is only one option. We take everything we have, our heart and soul, and lay it on the table for the dealer. God is going to have to give these physicians the inspiration. They cannot work miracles alone. We cannot expect them to give us answers to all of our questions. They just don't have them. When I suggest that they didn't say what we wanted to hear, it's because, in this case, they don't have the "authority" to do that. Only God does. And he is expecting us to take that leap of faith.

Sooooo, What next? Dr. Kourlis spent a great deal of time laying out every potential scenario for us. He discussed every possibility and answered every question we had. He defined every risk and then it was if he turned on his risk calculator in his head and gave us the "this is what I think you should do."

1. Proceed with Chemo and radiation as scheduled.
2. Have the colon surgery following a rest period after chemo and radiation.
3. Follow the colon surgery with 6 months of chemotherapy, and then do the heart surgery.
4. Have regular CT scans to monitor the status of the heart.

Everything is subject to change at any point. Of course, an emergency situation with his heart would put a hold on everything else. Also, the CT's will be used to monitor changes in his heart. If there are changes, The plan will again change. And lastly, Dr Kourlis highly recommended we speak to another physician regarding Mark's plan of care. He repeatedly encouraged us to see another surgeon, possibly Dr. Cooley that place Marks artificial heart valve many years ago. He was very interested for us to let him know if we received any different perspectives to consider.

Keep the prayers coming. It's the only way. I know he hears and is supporting us through all of you.

Tuesday 10-21-08 Great cardiac surgeon but looks like the plan stays the same for now. Will attempt to seek more advice since the heart and the colon together are more complicated. Mark will start Chemo- therapy and radiation on Thursday in WF for 5 weeks. Keep us in your prayers as our plans unfold.

Sorry so late,

I finally have a minute to breathe. We are running, running every day. So many people to thank today. Our extended family at eigth street and at eleventh street at the hospital blew us away today with their acts of kindness. Many thanks to all of you for your gifts to make our days a little easier to get through. You all mean the world to us. And to everyone who is take care of us during these stressful times.

Now what you have all been waiting for. The visit with Dr. Crim went well today. Each day so far seemed to bring such gloom. Today, nothing much has changed medically, but we met up with someone who gives such a positive outlook. He is very comfortable with his decision for Mark's plan - like he does this every day! Exactly the reason we were sent here. He says that he is aggressive and it is his job to fix things. He feels Marks cancer is very treatable and he believes he is working to cure Mark. Yea!!

He is very honest about the difficult road ahead. He agrees with the plan as it is and says that it is standard to treat for 5 weeks with Chemotherapy and Radiation prior to surgery. He will do surgery approx 6 weeks following the treatments. He also confirmed that Mark would have another 6 months of Chemo following surgery. The surgery, specifically the reconstruction is apparently a very complex one and he gave us much "light reading" to learn more about it. He did make the newest reconstruction options available to us which seem to have come a long way over the last ten years. Mark was very pleased with this.

Tomorrow, we are seeing Mark's Cardiologist in Wichita Falls, and a Cardiovascular surgeon in Dallas to discuss options for the repair of Marks heart. I haven't been real specific about the concerns of his heart, but hope to fill you in with greater detail tomorrow after we have some more answers.

Mark was very happy today and really liked Dr. Crim. It was really good to see him be so comfortable with someone we just met. He really liked his positive outlook.

Time to go rest before we start all over tomorrow. Thank you for all your prayers. They are definitely being heard.

Missy reported the appointment with the colorecto - Surgeon, in Dallas went well. The visit was very positive with the surgeon agreeing with the radiation plans over the next 5-6 weeks. Both Missy and Mark liked the surgeon and his approach to Mark's recovery. There is no surgery date determined at this time. After tommorrows visit with the cardiac surgeon they will have more information to make the plans for the course of Mark's treatment. More information will follow after tommorrows appointments with the cardiac surgeon. Thanks for the prayers, thoughts and calls.

Hello all,

I thought everyone could use a big smile and this makes me smile.






No new news today. We all know nothing happens on the weekends in the medical world. That's okay, because that gives us time of to focus on our prayers. Speaking of, I know that all of us have so many prayers to send, but if we could make room to add a few more to the list, we know of a couple. In this small community we live in, we seem to have been plagued recently with bad news. We are overwhelmed with cancer! We have several friends who also have been diagnosed recently with cancer of various forms. We know that they and their families are in need of the same support that we are as we all have a long road ahead of us. I have no doubt that one day we will all be looking back on this time able to see how far we have come, but until then, please help us pray for them too. Pauline, Laurie, Pam, God is on our side. We must stay focused on him and gain strength through Him each step of the way.



Tomorrow is a very big day. Mark says he is so ready to "just get this show on the road." The waiting and unknowns are difficult, but all on His schedule. We will update probably tomorrow evening when we return. Thanks to our parents for covering the kids over the next few days.

Hello all,

We received some news today. Many of you probably remember many years ago when Mark had an artificial valve replacement to correct a heart condition that he was born with. Since that time, he has had routine visits to follow the status of his heart. As part of the preparation for his surgery, they have been doing testing to further evaluate his heart. Some concerns have arisen that pose increased risks. His cardiologist will see him again on Tuesday and we will go to Dallas to see a cardiac specialist on Tuesday as well. Please keep praying that God gives all of these doctors a clear plan to treat Mark with the best care possible.

While today was a difficult one, we keep striving to recognize something positive in each day. If it weren't for Mark's cancer diagnosis, they would not have discovered these new findings at this time. All of these pieces are going to come together one day - on God's schedule!

CT scan results

Hello all,

So sorry for the wait. I know everyone is on pins and needles. Mark had his CAT scan this morning and we had good news. There are no spots on his liver or in his lungs. Yaaaahhh. The tumor was visible and it is growing beyond the wall of the rectum. It does appear that there may be some pelvic lymph node involvement as well. So, good and not so good, but I will take any kind of good we can get.

You cannot imagine how touched we are by all of your e-mails and calls. I have never experienced anything like the support that we have seen over the last couple of days. Sometimes from people we don't even know! It is really very powerful and inspirational to hear so many kind and caring words. So many of them come from people who have been where we are and now can tell their story. We plan to do the same one of the days.

I just have to make note of one of the most exciting e-mails I got today. My cousin Janine e-mailed to tell us that Dr. Crim, the surgeon Mark will see, is one of her good friends! Is that not incredible. We all know how beneficial it can be to know people in the right places, but this is just awesome. She was going to contact him to let him know she had family coming. What a blessing, and like she said, a small world!

Hello All,

I am finally going to get this communication thing under control, I hope. We are desperately wanting to keep in touch with all of you and wish that there were enough hours in the day to talk to everyone. Even with the help spreading the word, I fear that we are failing miserably in our efforts to keep everyone updated.

First of all, there are some who still may not know of our recent news. This Monday Mark went for a colonoscopy and was diagnosed with cancer. Mark has had ulcerative colitis for approx. 14 1/2 years. This condition is one of the leading causes of colon cancer. We have known this and for this reason he has had numerous colonoscopies over the years. Both Mark and I anticipated this kind of news would come one day, but had no idea it would be so soon. It has been a whirlwind of emotion and activity since the moment we were told. Initially we had little information and a whole lot of questions. Our visit to the oncologist and the gastrointerologist have cleared up many of our questions. I apologize for the wait. I know everyone is as anxious as we are to get information. I am going to start with some of the most frequently asked questions to try and cover all this.

Q. How big is it?
A. We initially were told that the tumor was "not small." Today we learned that actual dimensions. It is 5cm (2 inches) in length and is half of the circumference of the lumen. Think of it as if you were looking into a cylinder. On the left hand side this tumor extends from 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock and down the cylinder for 2 inches. This is classified as medium size. The depth of the tumor into the wall is uncertain. The doctor's speculation is that it has infiltrated the full thickness of the wall of the rectum. They will know for certain after surgery.

Q. What stage is it?
A. There has been no staging. Typically this is done after surgery when the depth into the wall is determined and the lymph nodes have been tested. There are new techniques for staging prior to surgery by way of endoscopic ultrasound. We will ask the surgeon about this.

Q. Where is it?
A. In the rectum.

Q. Will he have to have surgery?
A. Most definitely. Initially we were told within a week. Then it went to two weeks. Now I think we are looking at six weeks out. Why so long?, See next question.

Q. Will he have to have Radiation or Chemotherapy?
A. This is the reason the surgery will not be immediate. He will receive 5 weeks of chemotherapy and radiation. Then have a recovery period and then have surgery. I have questioned this repeatedly as our first inclination is to want it out. Here is the explanation we have received. 15 to 20 years ago, the treatment for all cancer was to cut it out. Through research and advanced technology, they have learned things that are applicable to rectal cancer. Many rectal cancers are infiltrative and spread rapidly lending to recurrence of cancer in other places in the pelvis, even when the tumor is removed. Treating with chemo and radiation prior to surgery shrinks the tumor, slows lymph node infiltration and reduces recurrence of cancer in the pelvis. In other words the old "just get it out" has been slightly modified for rectal cancer. Chemotherapy used preoperatively has the purpose of making the tumor more sensitive to the radiation thereby making the radiation more effective. The chemotherapy is taken in pill form. It is taken concurrently with the radiation. Radiation is scheduled to start Oct 23rd, or possibly sooner. Radiation is everyday, five days a week for five weeks.

Q. Where will he have to have surgery?
A. He will go to the Dallas area to have surgery. There are no colo-rectal surgeons in Wichita Falls. While we have some very good general surgeons, cancers of the rectum are often referred to a specialist as they can be slightly more complicated. We will be seeing the surgeon on Monday the 20th. His name is Dr. Randall Crim in Irving. The surgery will be at Baylor Medical Center at Irving.

Q. What kind of surgery will he have?
A. Unfortunately, Mark will lose his entire colon. This is not only a result of the tumor, but of the ulcerative colitis as well. The probability of recurrence is too great to take any chances with the rest of the colon, as the ulcerative colitis affects his entire colon. We have repeatedly been told we have no option but to do it this way.

Q. Has it spread anywhere else?
A. In the morning we are going to have a CT scan. (He is loving the prep as I am writing!) We know that the liver and lungs are primary sites of metastasis, and we will anxiously await those results. Please pray, pray, pray. We certainly don't want anymore bad news.

Q. Have you told the kids?
A. We have done so. They are doing as well as anyone. Such inquisitive minds, and definitely good medicine for us. As you might guess. The church hill and school are the center of our grapevine here in these parts. It only takes three kids praying for their dad at school to spread news like wildfire. You definitely don't need billboards around here!. No complaints for that for sure. We are so grateful for this community and our friends, family and support here. We just wouldn't trade it. The only regret is that I am told that news might have spread so fast that it got to family second hand. We are very sorry to all of those we haven't gotten to.

Q. How are ya'll doing this?
A. We have no idea!. God is good!

Q. How is Mark?
A. Mark is Mark. I am having the most trouble answering this one I think. I am not sure either of us really know how we are doing. He is such a wonderful person and so strong, but human too. We can work, work, work and occupy our time, but when that free minute comes, you might actually lose it. He has told me he has those moments too. Like I said, human. He is positive, and very witty, and yet realistic. We both agree that this is not going to get the best of any of us, but it is real and it is in God's hands. He has taken care of Mark before and he will do it again.

Q. What can we do?
A. You are doing it. Your caring and concern is evident by your phone calls, cards, e-mails and your taking the time to read such a lengthy e-mail. Even the independent side of me is well aware of the needs that will arise during this time. No doubt we will have to rely on family and friends for help over the next several months. Everyone can rest assured that I will suck it up and ask for help! (Even those who know I sometimes just say that) Just ask around. It has already started. More importantly, you can pray, pray, pray. We can't get through this without our faith. Bad things can happen to good people, and good people know where to turn when they do. We both know that these tests of faith can drag you down and we are counting on everyone's prayers to lift us up. "There is nothing that I do today that God and I can't handle"
